A BOOK OF DEPTHS (2019) In 1997 the Italian philosopher Massimo Cacciari wrote L'Arcipelago, a reflection on the geopolitical situation of Europe based on some examples of Mediterranean Cultures, a state of art of the human being confronted to others and its identity. This book starts with a a philological analysis over the different names that ancient Greece gave to the sea: Thálassa, Pélagos, Póntos, Atrygetos, Polyphloisbos. Such names will represent the five movements (or section) of a new composition for chamber ensemble each one called according a different ocean's layer: Epipelagic – Mesopelagic – Bathypelagic – Abyssopelagic – Hadapelagic, ranging from the most luminous (flute and violin) to the darkest one (harp, percussion). |
