Péter Eötvös, who died on March 24, 2024, was not only a world-famous composer and conductor, he was also a pioneering composer and performer of electro-acoustic music. And not only as an assistant to Karlheinz Stockhausen, but perhaps even more so as a member of the Oeldorf Group. Together with Mesías Maiguashca, Emmanuel Nunes, Pi-Hsien Chen, Joachim Kirst and Gaby Schumacher, the Oeldorf Group was seminal in experimenting with and composing for live played electronics.
The Oeldorf Group existed from about 1972/1973 to 1978/1979 and has since been largely forgotten. Practically none of the compositions during that time, such as Eötvös' "Airport Oeldorf", Maiguashca's "Oeldorf 8" or Nunes' "Oeldorf 75" have ever been performed again.
During the Covid lockdown, Lange//Berweck//Lorenz initiated a research project on the Oeldorf Group, for which we interviewed some of the protagonists of the time.
Here's our interview with Peter Eötvös in his Berlin apartment from 30 November 2021.
