View this email in your browser Dear members of Sonology's Concert Mailing List, You are invited to the Konrad Boehmer memorial concert on 4th October, 2024 at 20h in the Conservatoriumzaal, Amare. At 19h in the Conservatoriumzaal there will be a pre-concert lecture given by Italian musicologist Veniero Rizzardi on the ongoing dialogue between Luigi Nono and Konrad Boehmer.  The composer and musicologist Konrad Boehmer was born in Berlin in 1941. His early works were conducted by Bruno Maderna and Pierre Boulez. His dissertation on the open form in new music, which he defended in 1966 at the age of 25, made a great impression. In the same year he followed the route of his teacher Gottfried Michael Koenig to the Netherlands. Boehmer was initially embraced by the Dutch avant-garde and began teaching at the Royal Conservatoire in 1972. From 1994 to 2006 he was head of the Institute of Sonology. Konrad Boehmer died on 4 October 2014 in Amsterdam. As a music critic, Boehmer – often rightly, sometimes wrongly – attacked many of his colleagues at home and abroad, for example via his legendary radio programme Muziekspiegel. Perhaps because of the polemical battle in which he was regularly involved, the composer Boehmer has faded into the background in the Netherlands. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his death, the Konrad Boehmer Foundation has therefore asked the New European Ensemble to compile a programme of instrumental compositions by Boehmer and composers he admired, Willem Breuker, Luigi Nono and Edgard Varèse. The selected works by Boehmer have never been performed in the Netherlands before. As Berlin slowly turns cold and grey, now is the perfect time to plan a winter escape to the sunny paradise island of Madeira. This year, your annual hideaway takes place from November 28 to December 3. Buy Tickets MADEIRADiG 2024 28.11—03.12 The festival kicks off on Thursday 28, November, with Polish guitar mastermind Raphael Rogiński at the John Dos Passos Cultural Centre.   We continue at Casa Da Mudas, on Friday and Saturday presenting German installation and sound artist Christina Kubisch, Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Giske, Berlin-based experimental trio Contagious (Andrea Neumann, Sabine Ercklentz and Mieko Suzuki) and American guitarist David Grubbs. Continuing on Sunday and Monday with British electronic musician Nik Cold Void together with digital artist MAOTIK, Portuguese pianist Simão Costa, San Francisco-based noise experimentalist evicshen and multi-talented turntablist NikNak.   Back in Ponta do Sol, we finish off on Tuesday, December 3 with Scottish bagpiper Brìghde Chaimbeul, playing the traditional Great Highland bagpipe. Afterwards, we usually head to the vivid village lane for final drinks and to say goodbye. Read More Locations, Transport and Accommodation We have four days of concerts at Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira (MUDAS) in Calheta, shows and activities at the John Dos Passos Cultural Centre in Ponta do Sol—plus midnight hangouts on the cliffs at the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol.   A free shuttle bus will run each evening from Ponta do Sol to MUDAS. The John Dos Passos Cultural Centre is located in the heart of the Ponta do Sol village and the program there is free of charge. There are direct flights to Madeira (Funchal) from Berlin, London, Paris and New York. For the best festival experience stay in Ponta do Sol. Alongside our hotels, there are plenty of private rentals available, however, be sure to book something within a 15-minute walk from the main Hotel Estalagem da Ponta do Sol.   Set against the dramatic backdrop of Madeira’s volcanic cliffs, MADEIRADiG’s challenging line-up reflects the rugged landscape, with the island’s spring-like temperatures providing a gentle contrast. „Trimer“ – is a structure consisting of the polyphony of three intertwined lines with the same timbre and forms the starting point of this piece. Each individual note of the toy piano was first sampled and then reassembled into two independent virtual instruments. The instruments on the playback tape were tuned 25 cents (1/8 tone) lower and 25 cents higher than the original. The simultaneity of the live-played instrument and the virtual toy pianos creates a dense microtonal web of short, repetitive, and chromatic motifs. The piece was originally written for Bernd Wiesemann (1938–2015) and was released on the SACD (5.1) "Das untemperierte Klavier“ („The Untempered Piano“) in 2003.
