Bowling
Green State University invites applications and nominations for the position of
Dean of the College of Musical Arts (CMA). The CMA enjoys a national and
international reputation with special emphases in music performance, music
education, and contemporary music. Since 1947, the CMA has been an accredited
institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The
Department of Music Education is accredited by the National Council for the
Accreditation of Teacher Education.
ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The college offers baccalaureate and graduate degree
programs to nearly 500 music majors under the guidance of 53 distinguished,
full-time faculty. Undergraduate majors are available in music education, music
performance, music composition, jazz studies, world music, and music history.
Minors are available in jazz studies, music industry, and recording technology.
Master’s degrees include music education (4 specializations), music performance
(9 specializations), music composition, music theory, music history, and
ethnomusicology. Our unique Doctor of Musical Arts in Contemporary Music offers
specializations in composition and performance. In addition, CMA students have the opportunity to live in
two music-related learning communities.
BGSU is a recognized home for contemporary
music. Its MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music (MACCM), promotes new
music creation, performance, and research. MACCM hosts an annual New Music
Festival, for which more than 30 composers from around the nation and the world
come to campus for performances of their newest works by students, faculty, and
guest artists. BGSU’s outstanding faculty performers
and student ensembles are featured on “New
Music from Bowling Green”, produced by WGTE Public Media. These innovative
radio broadcasts are currently carried by 59 radio stations across
the country and have reached 1.9 million listeners since premiering in 2013.
A major cultural resource in northwest Ohio, the
college brings a rich diversity of music to Bowling Green and surrounding
communities with over 600 annual concerts, recitals, and public events. The College’s
musical calendar features more than 25 performing ensembles, plus a variety of
student chamber music groups and soloists, two fully staged operas, and
collaboration with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. Student and faculty ensembles
from the College frequently perform at national and international conferences.
The CMA’s curricula are enhanced by BGSU’s Music Library & Sound Recordings
Archives, featuring the largest collection of popular music recordings in any
academic library in North America.
The College plays a vital role in youth music
programs in northwest Ohio, hosting the Summer Music Institute, a series of
intensive music camps for middle and high school students, as well as annual offerings
for the region’s middle and high school instrumentalists, vocalists, and their
teachers. In addition, the college works with the Toledo School for the Arts, a
charter school in downtown Toledo, as well as with Toledo Public Schools,
parochial schools, and suburban public school programs.
The CMA is housed in the Moore Musical Arts
Center, which features the 850-seat Kobacker Hall and the recently renovated, 231-seat
Bryan Recital Hall, along with music technology and recording studios, a music
computer lab, 68 faculty studios and offices, and 70 practice rooms. The $40
million Wolfe Center for the Arts, which opened in 2011, is a 93,000-square-foot
center that has fostered creativity and collaboration between the disciplines
of music, theater, film, digital arts, design, sound, and dance. The Wolfe
Center’s Donnell Theatre seats 400, while the black-box Eva Marie Saint Theatre
is a more intimate performance space. Finally, the Kuhlin Center, new home for
the School of Media and Communication, contains a state of the art recording
center.

MAJOR
RESPONSIBILITIES
BGSU is looking for outstanding candidates with
the vision, skill and motivation to lead the College in these endeavors.
Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President, the successful candidate
will be expected to:
·
provide leadership in the arts at BGSU through
collaborations with colleagues in the arts on campus and in the region;
·
contribute an innovative vision for enhancing
our music programs;
·
assume a leadership role in development and
strengthening endowment support from public and private sources;
·
demonstrate leadership in supporting competitive
undergraduate and graduate programs in music;
·
promote the College’s vitality, growth and rigor
of established and creative activities, new research and scholarship;
·
initiate and foster enhanced opportunities for
interdisciplinary and intercollegiate pursuits in research/creative activity
and teaching through a mix of performance, academic, and liberal arts;
·
administer comprehensive recruitment and
retention plans for staff, faculty and students with an array of musical
specialties commensurate with the College and University missions;
·
successfully direct the College’s strategic
planning processes; and
·
oversee the effective management of day-to-day
operations.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
The
candidate’s curriculum vitae must clearly evidence:
·
an earned doctorate, and exemplary musical,
teaching, research/creative activity, and service credentials appropriate to
the rank of full professor with tenure in the College;
·
a minimum of three to five years in academic
leadership roles in a university setting;
· a
passionate commitment to music and the education of musicians at the highest
level;
·
experience with National Association of Schools
of Music (NASM) and/or other accreditation;
·
demonstrated success in overseeing capital and
structural improvement projects; and
·
a record of successful development activity
involving public and private sources to support program goals and vision.
PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONS
The
successful candidate should also demonstrate:
·
comprehensive understanding of national and state
trends and major issues facing the education and training of professional
musicians, composers and theorists, and scholars and teachers of music in the
21st century;
·
knowledge of and experience with technological
innovations in musical performance and education; and
·
commitment to promoting diversity.
Salary is commensurate with experience and
credentials.
