­ Dear friends and music lovers,  The Digital in Berlin label has officially launched! A big thank you to everyone who came down to MaHalla on Saturday for our Kiezsalon and label premiere. It was a proud moment for us, and a blast! As usual, Roland Owsnitzki was on hand to capture some impressions.   In less than a week, we return to another favourite setting, this time the rooftop terrace of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt with three concerts, including two Berlin premieres. ­ ­ Violist and vocalist Alison Cotton and singer and keyboardist Whitney Johnson (aka Matchess) premiere new albums, and Japanese vocalist and guitarist Ichiko Aoba presents a performance of her dreamlike soundtrack to an imaginary film.   After two years of sold out shows, as well as co-curating the 21 Sunsets series at this beautiful space, we are looking forward to another evening on the ‘pregnant oyster’ rooftop. ­ Book your Ticket ­ ­ London-based Alison Cotton will premiere her album The Portrait You Painted of Me, for the first time in Berlin. As with her previous solo work, the touchstones of her immersive sound are viola, harmonium and voice.    Cotton may expand folk’s raw emotions into more avant garde territories, but they still feel possessed by a blood-red muscle memory that goes back centuries. — The Guardian ­ ­ Thriving on collaboration, violist, singer and keyboardist Whitney Johnson (aka Matchess) has worked with a long list of rock bands and experimental projects, and “has been ubiquitous on Chicago’s underground music scene for more than a decade” — The Chicago Reader.   Her album Sacracorpa, was named by Pitchfork as one of the best experimental albums of 2018. ­ ­ Ichiko Aoba is a Japanese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.    According to Pitchfork, her …greatest strength is her ability to create pockets of intimacy… her breathy vocals and placid guitar playing… create a hypnotizing shroud that makes you feel like she’s performing for you alone.   Her vocals featured on the soundtrack of the 2019 Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. ­ ­ ­ ­ In the meantime, check out some impressions from our label launch here.
