Both are outstanding beacons of dedicated programming, excelling in excepional Imorovised and other Musics. The venues will reveice an unrestricted award of $50,000 each. Previous Instant Award recipients are Susan Alcorn, Raymond Boni, Peter Brötzmann, John Edwards, Satoko Fujii, Milford Graves, Mats Gustafsson, Okkyung Lee, Arto Lindsay, Paul Lytton, Joe McPhee, Ikue Mori, Sam Newsome, Evan Parker, Alexander von Schlippenbach, LaDonna Smith, Henry Threadgill, Nate Wooley, Tristan Honsinger, Tobias Delius, and Christian Lillinger. 2024 recipients are Cafe OTO, London, and KM28, Berlin. "The jazz club, with its dim lighting and closely packed tables, looms large in our collective imagination." As Giovanni Russonello has stated in the New York times: "But the real blood-pumping moments — the shows where you can sense that other musicians are in the room listening for new tricks, and it feels like the script is still being written onstage — have been happening most often in venues that don’t look like typical jazz clubs. They’re spaces where jazz bleeds outward, and converses with a less regimented audience." Venues today are often times driven by non-for-profit organisation that operate from tiny desks with big hearts. Total devotion, no work-life-balance, and great great music year in and year out. These venues are the heartbeat of the ever-changing precarious greatness of the contemporary music scene. They make the things happen that push the envelope and the music inch by inch into the present of the future. And they are loved by musicians and audience alike. For all the best reasons. We think Cafe OTO and KM28 are two of the best of these and the Instant Award in Improvised Music wants to acknowledge and support these exemplary structures wholeheartedly.   Cafe OTO Cafe OTO opened in 2008 in a disused former paint factory in London. The venue is unique in presenting experimental music year round seven nights of the week. Cafe OTO has no stage and three large windows look out onto the street creating a connection between the audience, the musicians and the street beyond. Cafe OTO’s programme is international connecting the community of musicians in the UK to musicians, venues and networks from all over the world. An essential vehicle for this is its residency programme. Early on Cafe OTO started hosting residencies with musicians over several nights partially as a way of making it viable to bring musicians from overseas to the venue without funding. Many new collaborations have been established and working groups formed as a result that have gone on to tour, record and have a life of their own. In addition to the live programme Cafe OTO runs an in-house label OTORoku that has released records by Loren Connors, Peter Brötzmann, Pat Thomas, Maggie Nicols, Otomo Yoshihide, Joe McPhee, Okkyung Lee, Roscoe Mitchell, Keiji Haino and many others. Cafe OTO receives no regular funding to cover core costs and survives through its members and ticket income.   KM28 KM28 is a volunteer-organized venue for contemporary composition, improvised and electronic music, and forward-looking jazz founded in late 2018. Going against the grain in a rapidly gentrifying district of Berlin, it remains a staunchly noncommercial space that puts on shows that are as much like house concerts as possible.In terms of programming KM28 offers a number of series that focus on specific questions and ideas repeatedly over a longer period of time. Currently these are: Divide by Zero:  A series emphasizing new collaborations between inventive and adventurous artists (Nick Dunston) Entangled Sounds:  A series exploring object-specific sounds, resonant bodies and (meta-)mechanical motion, featuring performers using self-made instruments or materialities of audio/media reproduction (Karin Weissenbrunner) Harmonic Space Prime Time:  Members of the Harmonic Space group present their more left-field explorations of tuning and spectrum. (Harmonic Space Orchestra) Making Waves: A series of monthly screenings, talks, and lectures on freedom of speech, art as resistance, Palestine, the German question, and more (Khomasi Group) Nowhere Street:  Improvisational practices are used to thread artists who don't have a fixed musical address. (Peter Margasak) Power Loom:  A series on live electronic music performed by Berlin-based artists (Lizzie Davis & Bridget Ferrill) and Sequence:  A series for recent sounds and collaborations, with a focus on contemporary repertoire (Sarah Saviet). Juni 2024 Unter der Schirmherrschaft eines anonymen Mäzens und Musikliebhabers wird der Instant Award in Improvisierter Musik 2024 zum ersten Mal an zwei herausragende Spielstätten verliehen. Beide sind herausragende Leuchttürme engagierter Programmgestaltung, die sich durch exzeptionelle Improvisierte Musik und andere Musik auszeichnen. Die Veranstaltungsorte erhalten jeweils einen Preis in Höhe von 50.000 Dollar, der nicht zweckgebunden ist. Wie Giovanni Russonello in der New York Times feststellte: "Aber die wirklich aufregenden Momente - die Shows, bei denen man spürt, dass andere Musiker im Raum sind und nach neuen Tricks Ausschau halten, und bei denen man das Gefühl hat, dass das Drehbuch noch auf der Bühne geschrieben wird - finden am häufigsten an Orten statt, die nicht wie typische Jazzclubs aussehen. Es sind Räume, in denen der Jazz nach außen dringt und sich mit einem weniger reglementierten Publikum unterhält." Veranstaltungsorte werden heute oft von gemeinnützigen Organisationen betrieben, die von kleinen Schreibtischen aus mit großem Herzen arbeiten. Totale Hingabe, keine Work-Life-Balance und großartige Musik, Jahr für Jahr. Diese Veranstaltungsorte sind der Herzschlag der sich ständig verändernden, unsicheren Größe der zeitgenössischen Musikszene. Sie sorgen für die Dinge, die den Rahmen sprengen und die Musik Stück für Stück in die Gegenwart der Zukunft bringen. Und sie werden von Musikern und Publikum gleichermaßen geliebt. Aus all den besten Gründen. Wir denken, dass Cafe OTO und KM28 zwei der besten von ihnen sind, und der Instant Award in Improvised Music möchte diese beispielhaften Strukturen von ganzem Herzen anerkennen und unterstützen.   Cafe OTO Das Cafe OTO wurde 2008 in einer stillgelegten ehemaligen Farbenfabrik in London eröffnet. Es ist ein einzigartiger Veranstaltungsort, der das ganze Jahr über an sieben Abenden in der Woche experimentelle Musik präsentiert. Das Cafe OTO hat keine Bühne, sondern drei große Fenster, die auf die Straße hinausgehen und eine Verbindung zwischen dem Publikum, den Musikern und der Straße schaffen. Das Programm des Cafe OTO ist international und verbindet die britische Musikergemeinschaft mit Musikern, Veranstaltungsorten und Netzwerken aus der ganzen Welt. Ein wesentliches Instrument dafür ist das Residency-Programm. Das Cafe OTO hat schon früh damit begonnen, mehrtägige Residencies mit Musikern zu veranstalten, um auch ohne finanzielle Mittel Musiker aus dem Ausland an den Veranstaltungsort zu bringen. So entstanden viele neue Kooperationen und Arbeitsgruppen, die anschließend auf Tournee gingen, Platten aufnahmen und ein eigenes Leben führten. Neben dem Live-Programm betreibt das Cafe OTO das hauseigene Label OTORoku, auf dem bereits Platten von Loren Connors, Peter Brötzmann, Pat Thomas, Maggie Nicols, Otomo Yoshihide, Joe McPhee, Okkyung Lee, Roscoe Mitchell, Keiji Haino und vielen anderen erschienen sind. Das Cafe OTO erhält keine regelmäßige Finanzierung zur Deckung der Grundkosten und lebt von seinen Mitgliedern und den Einnahmen aus den Eintrittskarten.   KM28 KM28 ist ein Ende 2018 gegründeter, ehrenamtlich organisierter Veranstaltungsort für zeitgenössische Komposition, improvisierte und elektronische Musik sowie zukunftsweisenden Jazz. Gegen den Strich gebürstet in einem schnell gentrifizierenden Bezirk von Berlin, bleiben wir ein konsequent nicht-kommerzieller Raum, der Shows veranstaltet, die so viel wie möglich wie Hauskonzerte sind.In Bezug auf die Programmierung bietet KM28 eine Reihe von Serien, die sich auf bestimmte Fragen und Ideen wiederholt über einen längeren Zeitraum konzentrieren, derzeit sind dies: Divide by Zero: Eine Reihe, die neue Kollaborationen zwischen erfinderischen und abenteuerlustigen Künstlern in den Mittelpunkt stellt (Nick Dunston) Entangled Sounds: Eine Reihe, die sich mit objektspezifischen Klängen, Resonanzkörpern und (meta-)mechanischer Bewegung befasst und in der Performer mit selbstgebauten Instrumenten oder Materialitäten der Audio-/Medienwiedergabe arbeiten (Karin Weissenbrunner) Haermonic Room: Mitglieder der Gruppe Harmonic Space präsentieren ihre eher unkonventionellen Erkundungen von Stimmung und Spektrum.
