After being fascinated by the opening pages of L'Arcipelago by the Italian philosopher Massimo Cacciari - a keen philosophical reflection on the five names that ancient Greeks gave to the sea - i found very inspiring to read that scientists divide oceans into five layers: Epipelagic, Mesopelagic, Bathypelagic, Abyssopelagic, Hadopelagic. I could then imagine a correspondence between the meaning of those ancient names and the physics and characteristics of the five layers, that was the starting point to develop my idea. In the first step of this composition project - the five short pieces A Book of Depths(2019) - I designed five moments each one with a very peculiar sonic identity having a different degree of “luminosity” and therefore simulating a progressive descent into depth. In the further expansion of my idea, such elements would combine together, one by one, reaching a final degree of density and complexity by creating diverse superpositions and interpolations. As for many other works coming from my personal attachment to the sea (Lasco, 2010 – A Book of Waves, 2012 – Aquae, 2014 – Mare, Logos, 2016 – Limina, 2019) I sometime project images and ideas I get from its observation, listening and contemplation into sonic structures, musical situations. And, as a matter of fact, it seems to me that a certain flow, a continuity, an almost atemporal musical discourse can be find in some of my latest works, a progressive sensibility for a sound that is not directional nor focused on narration but rather conceived according a sort of timeless perception – even if precisely and detailed organized. |
