Composition Contest and Residency for Acoustic Instrument and Sampo
Saint-Etienne 11 - 18 May 2019
Musinfo is pleased to announce the sixth edition of the Composition Contest and Residency for Acoustic Instrument and Sampo. With this initiative Musinfo supports the work of contemporary composers in the field of live-electronic. The residency will take place during the 2019 Art & Science Days in Saint-Etienne.
The winning composers will receive a commission from Musinfo to compose a new work for an acoustic instrument and Sampo. Sampo is an electronic device made for any musician or composer to expand the sound field of an acoustic instrument.The writing of the new composition will include two phases:
• First, the winners will work with the P-Soft software which emulates Sampo. They will exchange with the performers of OpusCentrum ensemble, who will prepare the works on their Sampos.
• The winners will then be invited to carry out their residency in Saint-Etienne for one week to finalize their compositions and prepare the concert which will take place during the 2019 Art & Science Days together with the performers. Sampos will be made available to composers during the residency.
Applications must contain the following elements:
1 - Short biography (1500 characters maximum)
2 - Photo (for publication at the announcement of residents)
3 - Letter of motivation
4 - Short sketch to demonstrate the composer’s understanding of the work with P-Soft and Sampo.
5 - 1 to 2 scores of recent compositions. Any works containing electronics shall be accompanied by a recording of the work.

Rules of participation:
- Deadline for sending files: January 31, 2019.
- The competition is open to composers of all ages and backgrounds.
- Winners of previous editions of the Contest cannot apply.
- The applications are made anonymous before given to the jury.
- The winners are selected based on the sketch, the letter of motivation and the sent scores.
- The sketch of one page maximum and in PDF format, composed for P-Soft and a solo acoustic instrument, must be accompanied by the "bank" file containing the configuration. The P-Soft software emulating Sampo is available for download here: http://www.sampo.fr. No other software or audio files may be used. - An international jury will nominate the winners of the contest during February 2019. The jury may decide not to nominate any winners.
- The attendance of the laureates during the residency is required.
- The choice of instrument for the commissioned work will be made by Musinfo (this year either flute or cello).
Financial conditions:
- Registration is free of charge.
- Musinfo will support meals, accommodation and domestic travel to and from Saint-Etienne.
- International travel costs will be borne by the winners.
Prize:
- The winners will receive a commission to write a new composition.
- The winners will carry out a residency of one week, from 11 to 18 May 2019 in Saint-Etienne.
- The new composition will be premiered at the end of the residency during the Art & Science Days 2019 by Opus Centrum ensemble.

Les compositeurs lauréats du concours recevront une commande de Musinfo pour composer une oeuvre nouvelle pour instrument acoustique et Sampo. Sampo est un dispositif électronique pour tout musicien ou compositeur pour élargir le champ sonore d’un instrument acoustique.
Le travail de composition se fera en deux temps :
• Dans un premier temps, les lauréats travailleront avec le logiciel P-Soft émulant Sampo. Ils échangeront avec les interprètes de l’ensemble OpusCentrum qui prépareront les oeuvres sur leurs Sampos.
• Les lauréats seront ensuite accueillis en résidence à Saint-Etienne pendant une semaine pour finaliser leurs compositions et préparer le concert de clôture des Journées Art & Science 2019 avec les interprètes. Des Sampos seront mis à disposition des compositeurs pendant la durée de la résidence.
Les dossiers de candidature doivent comporter les éléments suivants :

Règles de participation :
- Date limite d’envoi des dossiers : 31 janvier 2019.
- Le concours est ouvert aux compositeurs de tout âge et de tous les horizons.
- Les lauréats des éditions précédentes ne peuvent pas participer au concours.
- Les dossiers sont rendus anonymes avant d'être transmis au jury.
- La sélection de lauréats porte sur l'esquisse, la lettre de motivation et les partitions envoyées.
- L'esquisse, d'une page maximum et au format PDF, doit être écrite pour P-Soft et un instrument acoustique seul. L'esquisse doit être accompagnée du fichier « bank » contenant la configuration. Le logiciel P-Soft émulant Sampo pour écrire l'esquisse est accessible au téléchargement ici : http://www.sampo.fr. Les exemples d’écriture pour Sampo ainsi que l’aide se trouvent à l'adresse : Logiciel et manuel.
- Un jury international nommera les lauréats du concours courant le mois de février. Le jury peut décider de ne pas nommer de lauréat.
- La présence des lauréats pendant la résidence est obligatoire.
- Le choix de l'instrument pour la commande sera déterminé par Musinfo (cette année flûte ou violoncelle).
Conditions financières :
- L'inscription est gratuite.
- Musinfo prendra en charge les repas, l'hébergement et le voyage aller-retour à l’intérieur de France.
- Les frais de voyages transfrontaliers restent à la charge des lauréats.
Prix :
- Les lauréats recevront une commande de Musinfo pour composer une nouvelle oeuvre.
- Les lauréats seront accueillis en résidence pendant une semaine, du 11 au 18 mai 2019 à Saint-Etienne.
- La nouvelle pièce sera créée pendant les Journées Art & Science 2019 par l’ensemble Opus Centrum.
