| Dear friends and music lovers, Thank you for attending the Kiezsalon last weekend. Your attentive and receptive presence on both nights transformed the haunting halls of MaHalla into a warm and intimate space. On Friday, we hosted our first collab with IKLECTIK, presenting an evening of adventurous sound and music from across the UK. On Saturday, we sold out MaHalla for the first time with a program full of Berlin premieres. We hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as we did. | | | Kiezsalon x Musikbrauerei04+05.10.2024 | The next Kiezsalon will venture north to our spiritual homebase where everything started 9 years ago: at the Musikbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg. On Friday, October 4th, we will kick off our return with the Berlin premieres of Ukrainian art-folk veteran Svitlana Nianio, UK-based jazz drummer Romarna Campbell and Japanese string enthusiast Atsuko Hatano. The program continues into Saturday with a focus on contemporary Irish music and art, for a special Kiezsalon as part of Zeitgeist Ireland 24. | | | Svitlana Nianio (UA)Friday, 04.10.2024 | Svitlana Nianio, a prominent figure from Kiev's underground scene, first emerged in the late '80s with her group Cukor Bila Smert'. Her music, steeped in primal myths, weaves together temporal and otherworldly dimensions, embodying a unique form of magic realism. Nianio experienced a resurgence in the 2010s, leading to reissues of her albums and a return to performing. The “lost” album Transilvania Smile appeared last year, described as “art folk pop”that is “amazingly zeitgeisty considering that it is almost 30 years old.” | | | Romarna Campbell (UK)Friday, 04.10.2024 | The music of Birmingham-based drummer Romarna Campbell is infused with the nomadic spirit of jazz and hip-hop. Her debut single Inherently Political earned her recognition as the BBC's Jamz Supernova's ‘New Name of the Week.’ She continued to make waves with 25 Songs for My 25th Birthday, a kaleidoscopic collection released throughout 2020-2021. | | | Atsuko Hatano (JP)Friday, 04.10.2024 | Atsuko Hatano, a string player, composer and improvisational musician based in Tokyo, creates innovative and multi-layered electronica using a five-string viola, pedals and Max/MSP. Over the past several years, Atsuko has released a trio of solo albums on Important Records. She also leads the collaborative project Triola, last seen in 2023 with the album Scapegoat, featuring contributions from the likes of Jim O’Rourke and Eiko Ishibashi. | | Returning to the 120-year-old Musikbrauerei is for us an annual pleasure. Nestled between Greifswalder Straße and Volkspark Friedrichshain, this former Schneider brewery is a rare gem in former East Berlin, having survived ongoing waves of gentrification. | | We look forward to seeing you all again in the fall in the neighborhood. Yours, Michael Rosen & Team | |
