Next week: Kiezsalon opening w/ Jessica Ekomane, Rosaceae, Alicia Edelweiss and Otis Sandsjö | Saturday, 26.06.2021

Dear friends and music lovers,

For the season opening in 2 weeks, we begin with 4 concerts at the themed gardens of Gärten der Welt with computer musician Jessica Ekomane, the evocative landscapes of Hamburg-based sound artist Rosaceae, a solo performance from Swedish saxophonist Otis Sandsjö, and the anomalous accordion music of Vienna-based singer-songwriter Alicia Edelweiss.

Jessica Ekomane by Camille Blake

Jessica Ekomane is a French-born, Berlin-based electronic musician and sound artist. Her practice unfolds around live quadraphonic performances and installations that seek a cathartic effect through the interplay of psychoacoustics, the perception of rhythmic structures, and the interchange of noise and melody. She was one of six composers chosen as collaborators by Natascha Süder Happelman for her installation at the German pavilion of the Venice Biennale 2019. Listen to her song Common Fate.

Rosaceae by Katja Ruge

Hamburg-based sound artist Rosaceae deals with complex and emotional source material via a brute sound that traverses noise, ambient, and experimental electronic music. Her music is a response to the genocide of the Yezidi population that began in 2014, focusing especially on the systematic, violent suppression of women. The voices of Yezidi women inform her visceral recordings, and her performances use projection surfaces, dancers, and samplers to explore the ways in which female traumas are processed, creating new diasporic narratives. Listen to her latest album Efia released by Pudel Produkte in Hamburg.

Otis Sandsjö by Hagen Moeller

Swedish saxophonist Otis Sandsjö is known for his physical, yet melancholic style of playing, and has grown to become much sought-after on the European progressive jazz circuit. 2011 saw his relocation from the west coast of Sweden to Berlin – where he found a musical home, forming the long-standing trio Speak Low with singer Lucia Cadotsch and double-bass player Petter Eldh. Listen to YUNG from the album Y-OTIS released by We Jazz Records.

Alicia Edelweiss by Thomas Lieser

Alicia Edelweiss is an Anglo-Austrian singer-songwriter and artist currently based in Vienna. She started her musical career as a 19-year-old street musician, hitch-hiking all over Europe for two years. In Portugal, she began to learn the accordion, which soon became her trademark, alongside her distinctive voice and love for circus and bizarre outfits. Edelweiss performs something between freak folk, anti-folk and chamber pop. Listen to Leonie from her 2019 debut album ‘When I'm enlightened, everything will be better’.
